Max A. Meek

The Honorable Max. A. Meek, Sr., 77, died Saturday, November 9, 2013.

Mr. Meek was born in Gaston, NC, on June 20, 1936. He was the son of the late Janie Alene Pendleton Meek and Leonard Alexander Meek. He grew up in Rock Hill, SC, and moved to Aiken in 1963. He was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken, SC.

Mr. Meek had a long career in public service, first serving as a police officer in Rock Hill and later with the Aiken Department of Public Safety. He then went on to serve as Summary Court Judge for Aiken County for nearly 30 years.

As a judge, Mr. Meek was well known and respected within the community for his fairness and common sense approach to law. Throughout his judgeship he was able to positively impact the lives of many people and even after his retirement he was often approached by people who had appeared before him in court and credited him with helping them turn their lives around.

Mr. Meek was an avid golfer and on most days he could be found at Palmetto Golf Club, where he was a member for 35 years. If not playing golf he was likely to be working in his garden or spoiling his beloved border collie, Blue. He was also involved with USCA Pacer Athletics and ran the basketball shot clock for several years. He was a lifelong supporter of the USC Gamecocks and also a member of the Boys at the Pond Card Club in North Augusta, SC.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Donna B. Meek; sons Max A. Meek, Jr. and David L. Meek of Aiken, and Douglas J. Meek of Jackson, SC; step-daughter Stephanie Lockwood of Aiken; step-sons Chris Powell of Aiken and Ed Powell of Missouri; and grandchildren Drew, Rachel, and Brad Meek of Aiken.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 16 at Saint Thaddeus Episcopal Church at 1:00 pm with the Reverend Grant Wiseman officiating. Interment will follow in the Saint Thaddeus Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Andrew Anderson, Gregory Drew, Dr. Gerald Gordon, James Head, Jonathan Jackson, Ross Jackson, Julian Lockwood, The Honorable Jake Trantham and Randy Warrick.

The family will receive friends at a reception following the service in the Stevenson-McClelland Parrish House at the church.
