Arthur Louis Gutmann Arthur Louis Gutmann Memorial

Born: May 11, 1933 in New York, USA
Died: October 18, 2014 in California, USA

In Memoriam of Arthur L. Gutmann

Many of us have seen Arthur Gutmann as a Lector with his wife standing beside him, as he read the HOLY WORD. And the reason she does this is because he shook from old war wounds.  Art practiced the readings and Studied the Bible. He is survived by Candy, his wonderful third wife.  He was twice widowed previously. He raised three children in the Episcopalian religion. His Irish mother was Roman Catholic, his father a German Lutheran.  His eldest sister was an Episcopalian who took him by the hand each Sunday to church for as long as he could remember.

Art attended St. John's University in New York under a full academic scholarship majoring in Comparative Religions and English Literature.  After graduation, he joined the Army and became a Counter -Intelligence-Corps Field Agent.   He also tried to serve as a Chaplains Assistant. Art was severely wounded in combat and lost an eye. The US Army awarded him a Purple Heart and a Silver Star.  After the war, he joined the Department of Defense and served in many capacities; places as well as Episcopalian and Anglican Parishes until he retired. Incidentally, the Department of Defense sponsored his Master's degree at the London School of Economics.

Art was dedicated to doing some kind of work to give back to his Parish. He ran for deanery in 2014. He and Candy felt warmly welcomed at Christ Church Alameda and wanted to give back.  Art said in part, “In our prayers we thank God for that.  I believe the Deanery would be supported by my strong faith; my world view and life view; the rector; and most important, God.”

We’ll miss you Art.  God Speed.
