Joseph Whalen's Story

Joseph A. Whalen passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, June 9, 2012, surrounded by his family at Palm Bay Hospital in Palm Bay Florida.
He was born and raised in Darby Borough.  Joe attened Blessed Virgin Mary School, St. Clements School and West Catholic High School for boys in Philadelphia.  Joe was a 1968 graduate of Darby High School.
A Veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Joe bravely served his nation as a member of the 173rd Airborne Division.
He married Jacquelyn McDermott in June of 1979 and lived in Sharon Hill, Pa prior to moving to Newark, DE.
Joe worked as a conductor for Amtrak until his retirement.  He enjoyed traveling, cruises, gambling, playing pool and practical jokes.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Joseph is predeceased by his parents, Louis Whalen and Margaret (nee Crane-Whalen) Griffith, step-father, Harold J. Griffith and his niece/goddaughter, Stephanie K. Whalen.
He is survived by his children, Anthony Whalen, Angela Stalter (Jesse), Nicholas J. Whalen, Shawn J. Whalen (Stephanie); his grandsons, Carter Whalen and Jacob Stalter; brother Stephen "Buddy" Whalen; sisters, Deborah Griffith McGee and Diane Griffith Smith; brother's-in-law, sister's-in-law, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, many cousins and many friends.
His Memorial Service will be private.  Memorial contributions in his name may be made online at www.vva.org/support.html
A Celebration of Joe's Life will take place on Saturday July 15th, 2012 from 2-6 pm at the Darby VFW Post #598, 816 Main St, Darby, PA 19023.
