 HELLER

MELVIN S. HELLER, M.D., age 93, and resident at The Quadrangle in Haverford PA, died peacefully at the hospice unit at Bryn Mawr Hospital on January 12, 2016. A prominent psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and Professor of Psychiatry at Temple School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Dr. Heller was a pioneer in the field of Forensic Psychiatry, and co-founded Temple University's Unit in Law and Psychiatry. In addition to teaching and holding a private psychiatric practice, Dr. Heller served as a consultant to ABC TV's Department of Broadcast Standards on the depiction of violence and sexuality on television. He was the author of many distinguished books and journal articles in the fields of medicine and psychiatry, and with a prolific memory and passion for writing and family, Dr. Heller published two volumes of memoirs in his last year.
He was pre-deceased by wife, Irmgard Heller, and is survived by 3 children, David Heller, Joan Heller Miller, and Paul Heller; other beloved family including Ken Miller, Karen and Larry Heller, Tom and Karen Murray, Bob and Russ Graham, Lauren Heller, Laurie Heller, Robin Bloom, the Rees and Foulkrod extended families, Sommer and Stacia Gray, Brooks Staley, and Lowry Kenigsberg; 6 grandchildren Cara, Julie, John, Cody, Jeremy, and Jake; great-grandchild Arden; and lifelong distinguished medical colleagues.
