Tenacious Tess

Theresa ‘Tess’ Weghorn was born on August 6, 1915. She lived an amazingly long life and witnessed everything from war, the depression, and prohibition, to the evolution of the automobile, television, and the birth of her own children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Her first job was at Met Life in New York City in the 1930’s. After getting married to her dear husband, Frank Weghorn in 1939 and moving to Merrick, Long Island, she had two children. Her devoted daughter Judith Browning Weir and loving son, Frank Weghorn, Jr.(Lakewood Ranch, Florida). She became a working mom and had a long career doing bookkeeping and accounting for several companies. During the summer months, the family enjoyed vacations in the Berkshires and extended road trips to Florida, Canada, and many national parks in the the western United States. Theresa was also a long time member and supporter of Cure’ of Ars Catholic Church where both of her children attended elementary school. Tess was a hard worker her whole life, including serving as treasurer to the Pointe Overlook Condominium Association (Lantana, Florida) for almost twenty years, until the age of 93. Throughout the challenges of life and the loss of her husband and daughter, Tess continued to forge ahead, embarking on new adventures and new relationships. Tess made an effort to stay active throughout her life. She loved to go dancing, bowled in a league, and even golfed for a short time. She always compared prices and would often go to three stores, CVS, Walgreen’s, & Publix, to complete her shopping. We affectionately referred to this as her ‘tri-fecta’! She also loved to stay busy with domestic chores and insisted on ‘swiffering’, hand washing the dishes, and ironing. She wasn’t just physically active – she was very attuned to keeping her mind sharp! She loved to play International Rummy, bingo,
gamble, read the paper daily, even past her 100th birthday. She had her first pet, a chihuahua named Friday, at 96 when she moved in with her grandson Ron and his wife Carey in Texas.\ She had three great-grand children that gave her endless entertainment: Mason, Ron’s son, and Grace and Knox, Melissa’s children. She enjoyed looking over their homework, often reworking the problems to see if she came up with the same answer, hearing about their sports and extra-curricular activities, and sometimes even attending. Tess traveled quite a bit these last few years. She went to Napa, Las Vegas, and for her 99th birthday there was a cruise. She enjoyed the margaritas and gambling on the cruise ship, along with all that the buffets had to offer. She also traveled throughout most of Texas, the east coast for the holidays with extended family and even Arkansas for a family vacation at the lake. She became a bit of a ‘foodie’ late in life, trying all sorts of new foods and indulging in her favorite beverage: an ice cold beer! She had a passion for queso, eggs in the morning, and above all else, BUTTER! That lady loved her butter! She was very open to new experiences and
meeting new people as this life around her evolved. She discovered a love for being pampered with regular manicure/pedicures, and she loved visiting with her friend Natalie and going out to lunch. Most of all, she loved us. She loved us with all she had, embraced the life that she had, and taught us to keep forging ahead, even when life doesn’t quite shake out the way you expect it to. We were blessed beyond measure to have her as long as we did.
