Reid B. Reames succumbed to complications from Alzheimer’s disease on Wednesday, June 7. He was born in Petersburg, VA on March 21, 1956, the son of Dr. David Reames and Dorothy Harrell Reames. He attended Walnut Hill Elementary School. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1974. While a high school student he was selected to attend the Governor's School in Virginia. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree of Science from the University of Virginia in 1978, majoring in architecture. He worked for the then S.W.A. Partnerships, an architectural firm in Richmond, VA in 1978-79 before entering the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania in September, 1979. He earned his Masters of Architecture degree in May, 1981. While a graduate student at Penn, Mr. Reames worked on the Louis I Kahn collection there.
In 1981 he joined Research Planning Associates, an architectural
firm in Philadelphia. The firm later became known at Architecture
Design Alliance. He retired on July 31, 2010 following a diagnosis of
Alzheimer's disease.
In his professional career Mr. Reames was responsible for several
major building and interior renovation projects for clients such as the
University of Pennsylvania, Conrail, Janney, D&B and others. He was an
active member of the International Facilities Management Association.
Mr. Reames was also an active member of the First Presbyterian
Church in Philadelphia. He served as President of the Council on
Community Concern, he was President of the Board of Trustee and
served as an Elder when he chaired the Mission Committee.
He was a founding Board member of MANNA. MANNA was formed
in 1990 by seven members of the Council on Community Concern of The
First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, to help nourish men, women
and children living with HIV j AIDS. He served on the Board of Directors
until 1996. In 1997 he donated his services pro bono, designing the
facility that MANNA occupied at 2323 Ranstead in Philadelphia from 1997 to 2017. He was one of the original volunteers that picked up meals from donating restaurants and delivered them to those homebound with HIV/ AIDS.
He continued as a delivery volunteer until 2012.
Mr. Reames survivors include his brother, David Reames III, his
sister-l-law Janet and nephew Aaron. His step-mother Jerry Reames also
survives. His life partner of 32 years and husband, Allan Schimmel also survives him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. David and
Dorothy Reames.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 2 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, located at the corner of 21st and Walnut Streets in Philadelphia.
