Michael Hoey's Story

Michael W. Hoey, 91, of Swarthmore, a World War II veteran and former longtime resident of Upper Darby, died Sept. 14 at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. Born and reared in South Philadelphia, Mr. Hoey was a 1938 graduate of Southeast Catholic High School. He had lived in Swarthmore for the past 10 years. He formerly resided in Upper Darby for 45 years. Mr. Hoey served in the Army during World War II. He was the owner/operator of Michael Hoey Interior Decorating for more than 45 years. Mr. Hoey was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the former Young Star String Band in South Philadelphia. A former longtime member of St. Alice Church in Upper Darby, Mr. Hoey was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Swarthmore. He was the father of Gene Hoey, who died in 2005, and the brother of Helen Dougherty, who died in 2006. Survivors: Wife of 63 years, Marie Barr Hoey; daughters, Marie M. Hoey of Swarthmore, Helen T. Eife of Drexel Hill; sons, Michael W. Hoey of Swarthmore, Joseph F. Hoey of Wildwood Crest, N.J.; brother, James L. Hoey of Drexel Hill; five grandchildren. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Alice Church, Walnut Street and Copley Road, Upper Darby. Visitation: After 9 a.m. Saturday in the church. Burial: SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple.
