Edna Shirley Maynard Lovell

Edna Lovell, 95, of Venice, FL, formerly of Larchmont, NY, passed away at Tidewell Hospice on February 21, 2013.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harold W. Lovell and her son, John W. Lovell.  Surviving her are daughter Judith Battit and  husband, Dr. George Battit of Belmont, MA and Naples, FL, daughter Joan Upham and husband, Donald Upham of Los Alamos, NM, daughter Jean Runnels of Simpsonville, SC, son Thomas Lovell and wife, Alice Lovell of Sarasota, FL, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.  Edna graduated from the New York College of Nursing with an R.N. degree and served in World War II as an Army Nurse, rising to the rank of Captain.  After the war she worked as a registered nurse at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital in New York where she met husband Dr. Harold W. Lovell.  After their marriage, she served as a deacon at the Larchmont Avenue Presbyterian Church, taught candy striper classes at the New Rochelle Hospital, sailed with the women’s auxiliary of the Larchmont Yacht Club and worked for various charities.  At retirement, they relocated to Casey Key where Edna became an avid golfer, volunteered at Venice Hospital and at Meals on Wheels.  Known as “Skipper” she enjoyed entertaining and was an excellent cook.  She was beloved by her family and by all who knew her.  She will be greatly missed.  Memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 2900 Clark Rd, Sarasota, FL 34233 or the Sarasota Humane Society, 2331 15th St., Sarasota, FL 34237.
