Am Irish Blessing from you boy...

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
and the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
Amen

Thoughts

The one thing that I remember most about my dad was his ability to talk to people and have them feel at ease. Even if he never met them before. He had a way of being at ease without even trying, and that sense shown through in just about everything he did. He was strong in his beliefs. The word Humble is a very good description of his overall personality. Dad was not about the awards or recognition. Dad was more about undying patience,which he showed all during his life.

From Your Daughter Jackie

Jackie:
Dad, we feel your presence here with us today. We say in the midst of our sorrow and loss that we are grateful that you lived your life among us. We are grateful for your quiet gentleness and for your firm resolve to live life and to die on your own terms. We take joy and relief in knowing that your suffering has ended. You were a gentle and kind man who served our country, worked hard to raise and care for your children; lived without material possessions; adored your grandchildren; and, nurtured and protected every living creature that you encountered. You showed us unconditional love, and taught us to respect not only each other, but all mankind, the wonders of nature, and the country we were blessed to be born into, the United States of America. We take comfort in knowing that you are now into the Everlasting Arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whose gift to us is HIS divine mercy. May you know Peace now and through all eternity. And may you be surrounded by your family and friends and all your adoring dachshunds that passed before you. God bless you, my dear Dr. Doolittle. Thank you for inspiring me to protect nature and to become the biologist that I am today. But, most of all thank you for always believing in me.
I will never forget the day, roughly 5 years ago, when I was packing up your worldly belongings to move you from Florida to Pennsylvania. There I found a very large package labeled “Jackie’s Accomplishments.” It brought tears to my eyes when I realized that since the day I left for college, and up until I picked you two suitcases in Florida, that you had saved every certificate, newspaper article, publication, award, etc. from my academic life and career. Your never-ending belief in my abilities and pride in my accomplishments are testament to the father you were and how much you loved me.
One of the most precious gifts you can give to a child is time. Dad, I want to thank you for all the precious time you spent with me and my siblings throughout our childhood: Be it the long Saturday drives down your favorite long and winding “Animal Road” to spot animals out our windows, then taking us for an ice cream cone treat at Wehr’s Ice Cream; taking us to Sunday mass then making us a homemade breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, and sometimes, even pancakes; making amazing school lunches for your children every school day in neat brown bags with our favorite foods at the crack of dawn, then driving us to school over 30 miles away so that we could attend Catholic elementary school before you yourself drove to work; finding animals in our huge back yard and if they were wounded or needed refuge, teaching us to heal and care for them (I raised motherless baby bunnies under my bed until they were old enough to be set free); making your homemade potato salad at family picnics and turkey stuffing at Thanksgiving; gardening with me in our backyard and teaching me how to grow vegetables; and, always, always sharing American history, especially Civil was battles with us, as you put up and took down the American flag which proudly flew in our front yard, so that we too came to honor our country.
And, thank you for giving your last five years to me and my family. Your time with us was so valuable and will always be cherished.
