Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Helena Wai (Yeung Sau Bing, 楊秀冰), a remarkable woman who touched the lives of all who knew her. Helena departed this world unexpectedly but peacefully on July 5, 2023, leaving behind cherished memories and an enduring legacy of compassion, dedication, and adventure.

Born in Hong Kong on March 10, 1938, she lived a full life and embodied the true essence of a nurturer, dedicating her life to the care of her husband, her family, and others.  Even after suffering several health setbacks in her final years, her goal of recovery was to resume being with, and caring for her husband. Their marriage of 55 years was a testament to the power of love and commitment, serving as an inspiration to all who witnessed their relationship.

Helena was a pillar of strength and tenderness within her family. She was a devoted mother, a loving grandmother, and a trusted sister.  Everyone that met Helena, knew that she always put the people she loved first.  Her devotion and guidance were invaluable, making a difference in all she touched.  Consistent with her nurturing spirit, her career as a registered nurse allowed her to empathetically tend to the needs of countless patients, providing compassion with her gentle touch and unwavering care.

Beyond her role as a nurturer, Helena possessed an adventurous spirit that was fueled by her love for travel.  She embarked on countless journeys starting with a voyage on a cargo ship to attend nursing school in London, England, followed by numerous cruises and tours around the world.  She embraced new cultures and relished the beauty of the world. Her adventurous spirit was infectious, and she encouraged others to seize every opportunity for discovery and personal growth.  She was always smiling and made friends wherever she went.

Helena was predeceased by her beloved parents, Yeung Gwok Wai (楊國威) and Tong Jin Zan (湯燕珍), and adored brother, Timothy.  She is grieved by her beloved sisters, Otilia and Irene, her cherished husband, Felix, her two loving sons, Eugene and Donald, her dearest grandchildren, Erin, Ewan and Adelaide, and a multitude of extended family members and friends.

In honour of Helena’s remarkable life, a memorial service will be held on Thursday July 13, 2023, at Ogden Funeral Home (4164 Sheppard Ave E, Scarborough, Ontario).  Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM.  The funeral service will be live streamed at www.ogdenfuneralhome.com.  Following the service, the family would like to invite and thank all those whose lives she touched with a memorial banquet at Perfect Chinese Restaurant (4386 Sheppard Ave E) at 4:00PM.

Let us find solace in the legacy Helena leaves behind. As we remember her warm smile, and her unwavering love.  May we be inspired to emulate her kindness, dedication, and passion for adventure. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
