John was also survived by his son Anthony Maher, granddaughter Brandy Maher'Sowders, great grandchildren Alexandria, Nate, Abby, Austin, and John. You will be miss and forever in our hearts! - Brandy Maher'Sowders
I could fill up the entire guestbook with my memories of John. I remember how wonderful and caring he was with students and staff at Roll Hill/CAPE. He always had/made time for all who stopped by his office. He stood by his staff through thick and thin, even delivering coffee and rolls to us when we were on strike, even though he was asked not to.
On a very personal note, I remember being hired back by CPS after a huge reduction-in-force mainly because John rejected everyone else with more seniority who interviewed for the available position. I got a call from HR saying, "That principal won't accept anyone but you so we hope we can rehire you." At the time I was just a third-year teacher but went on to work 30 years with the district and 3 more with Mayerson.
Alan, I enjoyed the many visits to your home to tutor and have dinner.
John was truly one-of-a-kind who has been and always will remain in my thoughts!

I had to write to tell you about how much I liked and respected John Maher even though I last saw him in 1974. That summer I met and enjoyed working with him at a daycamp. That fall I was a substitute teacher before getting a fulltime job. Roll Hill Elementary was my favorite place to sub because John was the principal. His support of subs was unique. At the beginning of each day, before classes started, he would greet me, make sure I had what I needed, and promise me that my class was his top priority for the day. At the beginning of class, he would greet the students and tell them firmly and kindly that their class was his top priority for the day. There were never any bad days subbing at Roll Hill because Mr. Maher set the tone. He was a great principal--respected and loved--by staff and students. - Mary Seay Brestel
