Angelika K. Furlong 1922 - 2014

Angelika (Angela) K. Furlong, 91, of Exton, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.

Angela was born on March 29, 1922 in Reicholzheim, Germany to Alois and Esther Kohler.  She was raised in Heidelberg, Germany with her sisters and best friends, Lilo and Annchen.   Angela had a tremendous spirit of adventure in her youth including a love of acting and singing.  She travelled extensively throughout her life and her adventures eventually brought her to the United States and to the great neighborhood on Disston Street in Northeast Philadelphia where she lived for over 40 years.

Angela married Henry (Hank) J Furlong in April of 1961 and became the devoted mother of Christopher, Henry and Esther.  Life continued to be full of adventures and challenges for Angela when she lost Hank to cancer after just 7 years of marriage.  With three young children to care for though, there was no time to slow down.  The tremendous love and support of family and friends carried her through the tough times.  She worked hard every day to ensure that her children never missed out on anything in life.  She encouraged them to work hard and taught them the value of a good education.  Most of all, she taught them the importance of love and family and of being a good, dependable, loyal friend.

Angela worked for many years as a secretary at Turner Construction Company.  Her retirement from Turner allowed her more time to travel and then to focus on the greatest loves of her life, her grandchildren.  Heather, Kristen, Julia, Christopher and Matthew were truly blessed to have had their “Omi” in their lives.  Omi was everything a grandmother should be – loving, kind, generous - and determined to spoil her grandchildren!   She was so proud of each of them and their accomplishments and was always their biggest fan and cheerleader.

Angela is survived by her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren – Chris and Lisa (Heather and Christopher)  Henry and Karen (Kristen), Esther and Brian (Julia and Matthew) – as well as her sister Annchen, her sister-in-laws, Eileen Furlong, Cass Furlong, Eileen Furlong and Helen Bowler and many wonderful and loving nieces and nephews. In addition, Angela is survived by the myriad of friends who became family as she touched their lives.

A Memorial Mass in honor of Angela will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Ss Peter and Paul Church, 1327 E. Boot Road, West Chester, PA at 10:30 am.  Visitation will be held in the Church from 9:45 to 10:15 am.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in her memory to any charity that benefits children or animals or cancer research.
