Betty Ellen Winchell

Betty Ellen Shelley Winchell, 78, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at her beloved Lake Murray home after a lasting illness. In hospice care for less than a week, Betty went peacefully in her sleep with her daughter by her side.

She leaves one daughter, Patricia Winchell Walker of Columbia, SC and 8 step-children including her loving step-daughter Elizabeth Robertson of Grenada, MS. She helped raise several step children and grandchildren. She leaves two grandsons, Richard Joseph Winchell Fore and Patrick Reagan Winchell and a number of step grandchildren including Andrew H. Robertson, Katie Robertson Laney, and Tracy Winchell Main.

She was the beloved wife of Richard “Dick” Winchell who preceded her in death. She worked for over 30 years at the SC Retirement System where she had many friends before retiring to help raise her two grandsons. She enjoyed gardening and volunteering in her community. She loved her friends at St. Michael's Lutheran Church and treasured her Bible Study group.

Born in Aynor, SC., she was the youngest and only surviving child of Mary Elizabeth and Joseph Hoyt Shelley. Betty spent all of her adult life in Columbia. She was known for her smile, friendly personality, and work ethic. She will be greatly missed by those who loved her.

A private memorial service will be held for family members.
