A Lifetime of Treasured Memories

My grandmother (Nana) was the most caring and wonderful person I've ever known. She was easily the first person I always thought of when I was asked in school to write about someone whom I idolized. She was always there for me whenever I needed her, even during some of those rough teenage years. She was a great listener and provided good advice based on years of experience. I always knew she was a wise, kind, and caring soul.

I still carry my work ethic today from something she once told me (and I sometimes mention the origin of my work ethic during my job interviews). She said, "Go to work every day - don't call in sick, arrive five minutes early - which is better than even one minute late, and always always always find something to do since your employer won't want to pay you if there is nothing to do." To this day, I have to be on my death bed before I call in sick. And, often when I make that call I feel horrible about it.

Nana's wisdom: I asked my Nana one day why she never went to church. It seemed odd to me that she sent her children to catholic school but didn't seem to follow any specific religion. She told me, "God is everywhere. I don't have to go to a church with four walls to talk to God; I can do that right here in my own home." She then said, "It doesn't matter what religion you are, as long as you 1) do the right thing 2) be kind to others 3) treat others the way you want to be treated 4) and most importantly, love as much as you possibly can with all of your heart."

I'm sure I will add more memories to this memory book over time; I wanted to share a few things about my grandmother that I have carried with me into adulthood. She was definitely a very special lady, and I was so lucky to have her in my life.

I miss you Nana. You touched my mind, my heart, and my soul. I've become the person I am today because of you. I will carry you always in my heart and share many memories with my grandchildren. Thank you for all you gave to me. I love you, Shelley.
