Obituary

John (Jack) Joseph Goggin, born October 17, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA, to Joseph and Rita Goggin, passed on peacefully in his daughter's home in Springfield, surrounded by the family he was a loving and devoted father and grandfather for many years, on September 11, 2017, at three twenty in the afternoon. Jack was raised by Frances and Mary Goggin, who preceded Jack in death along with his brothers, Frank and Joseph. Jack is survived by his daughter Mary and her husband Tim of Springfield, PA, and son Mike and his wife Johnna of Atlanta, GA; several grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and sisters Rita, Mary, Betty, Maryanne, and Kathleen. Jack was part of the first graduating class of Bonner Prendergast High School (previously Archbishop Prendergast) in 1957 and joined the United States Marine Corps a short time after, serving a number of years, honorably discharged in 1967. He owned a successful candy business, Candee Sales, with partners Glen and Ed, brother Frank, and nephew Frankie, for many years, that Jack devoted many hours to, and was a life-of-the-party salesman who earned a spot in the Hershey Candy Hall of Fame in 1989. Harrah's Casino and Racetrack and The Turf Club were his prized memberships, and he enjoyed many years as an honored patron of these establishments. He was a Marlboro man who loved a good cigar and a cold bottle of Budweiser while cheering on Philadelphia's sports teams, watching golf, or spending time with friends. Downing a half-gallon of ice cream or half a bag of candy—or his favorite later in life, Rita's Swedish Fish water ice—in one sitting were just a couple of his specialties, another being the ability to deliver a punchline in a way that would make even the stodgiest person belly laugh. His effervescence truly showed when he was being his usual generous self with friends, family members, and the many children's charities he supported. In lieu of flowers, please send a gift in Jack's name to The American Cancer Society http://www.donate.cancer.org. Mass will be held Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 10am, at Saint Andrew the Apostle Church, followed by a USMC color guard ceremony, and then a celebration of Jack's life at Anthony's Ristorante in Drexel Hill.
