Red Jacket

Lars was my First Assistant Engineer when I was a cadet back in the mid 70's. I'm sad to find his obituary when I was searching for him today. I sailed with him for 11 months on board the SS RED JACKET. As a cadet, he was tough on me and other cadets that joined that ship, but being the intelligent person he was, he became my teacher and friend. The later months in my program before I departed the ship, he befriended me in a way no other engineer ever did. Took me ashore and paid for meals and bar tabs. He told me he was proud that I came aboard with him and was determined to see me quit. I didn't quit and later became a Chief Engineer myself. He showed me hard ways, but I admired the fact that he taught me the needed skills to survive in the maritime industry. I hope that he was comforted in the last remaining days of his life. He was my friend and my condolences go out to his family. Bill Billman

I knew Larry, as he was called by all of his friends. It was many years ago. He was a very intelligent and fine person. He deserved the best in life. My thoughts and prayers are with you Larry. Rest in peace.
