Charles Schoefer 1941 - 2022
Dear friends,
We are sad to announce the unexpected passing of Charles Schoefer affectionately known as ‘Bud' on January 25, 2022.
Bud was born and raised in Philadelphia. He was a remarkable man with a keen intellect and fiery independence. He got his law degree from Northeastern University, and had a varied career including as a research technician, gang worker, draft and military counselor, legal intern and law clerk.
He was a fierce opponent of the Vietnam war, using his law skills to help young men avoid the draft. In the 1970s he snuck unnoticed into the Pentagon to collect pertinent information for the Selective Service Law Review to defend conscientious objectors across the country.
He ran the Philadelphia People’s Bail Fund for many years, worked for the state legislature as an investigator and counselor, knew everything about local politics and spent much energy challenging the tax policies in Philadelphia.
He was an avid music fan, often attending live concerts and supporting up-and-coming musicians. Over the years he sang with The Germantown Oratorio Choir, The Unitarian Society of Germantown Choir, Cumberland Singers, Singing City, and the Philadelphia Chamber Chorus.
He was 81 and died in his sleep of natural causes. He leaves behind his two sons Adam and Eric Schoefer, daughter-in-law Grace Gonglewski and granddaughter Silvia Schoefer.
